FIFA 17 saw the introduction of The Journey, an experimental attempt at a single player campaign which, from the looks of it, was a recipe for success, as The Journey will be returning for FIFA 18.
The Journey in FIFA 17 told the story of Alex Hunter, a rising football star that breaks into a Premier League Club and, by all accounts, was not a bad story at all considering it is a football game.
Andrew Wilson of EA claims that more than 10 million people have played The Journey, although he didn’t clarify if that was to completion or just someone trying it out for a few minutes but, either way, a decent number regardless.
Wilson said that FIFA 18 will “bring players back to The Journey with Season 2,” which suggests this may be a continuation of Alex Hunters story.
When you left him at the end of The Journey, Hunter had won the FA cup and been called up to play for England with some other story elements that set up the possibility for a sequel in Season 2, although it is just as likely we may see a totally new story as well for the new year.
FIFA 17 is clearly doing things correctly, as the game was the top-selling console title worldwide for 2016, outselling the likes of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and the still-popular Grand Theft Auto 5, which is impressive to say the least.
Although The Journey was a small part of that reason it is good to see EA put in some extra effort to make their sports games more diverse, and it will be interesting to see what they bring to the table for Season 2.
