Enter the Nostalgic World of Diablo 1 this January

Update: Patch 2.4.3 is now live.

In order to celebrate two decades of dungeon-crawling, hack-and-slash mayhem, Diablo 3 publishers Blizzard Entertainment revealed an all new event coming to Sanctuary: The Darkening of Tristram.

“An ancient evil stirs in the ruins of Old Tristram, and a mysterious portal has appeared that leads to the halls of an all-too-familiar cathedral. Deep beneath the catacombs, the Dark Lord awaits any intrepid adventurer who dares to challenge him.”

The event, which will commence with the launch of Patch 2.4.3 and run for the duration of January, will introduce a one-of-a-kind homage to the roots of the Diablo franchise, allowing players to explore the original events of Diablo 1, in glorious RetroVision, and featuring a number of retro-feeling mechanics including tinier and more frequently repeated original sounds, movement inhibitions, old school animations and UI and just eight degrees of rotation.

Take a look at Blizzard’s break-down of the upcoming nostalgia-fueled extravaganza (which includes a look at some of the team’s inspiration for the event):
