Veneration E-Sports (formerly Legion of Anubis) was founded by Alex ‘XaXas’ Van der Merwe, in 2012, predominantly as a Call of Duty clan. What simply began as gaming among friends quickly blossomed into a competitive team looking to expand.

XaXas partnered with Spartan Gaming Company owner and friend Steve “Perdition” French to combine their two clans in hopes of competing in the highest echelons of South African eSports. Perdition later retired from competitive gaming, after the birth of his first daughter, and senior players Warwick ‘Candle’ Parris and Werner ‘Vandiliz3r’ Du Plessis took up management positions within the budding multi-gaming organization (MGO).

Veneration enjoyed great success in individual competition, specifically StarCraft 2. Nathan ‘StatiC’ Anderson travelled to Bucharest, Romania to compete at the 2013 Dreamhack Open, and in 2014, 17-year-old Edwin ‘Drager’ Williams took first place at the annual Telkom Digital Gaming Championship (DGC) in South Africa.

With the decline of StarCraft 2, Veneration moved to invest in their Dota 2 and Counter-Strike divisions. Despite a fruitful career in Call of Duty, Jean ‘B0n3®’ Fick made the leap to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) and was able to lead his side to the Digital Gaming League (DGL) Premier Division in the space of a year.

During this time, Veneration developed one of South Africa’s brightest stars, Aran ‘Sonic’ Groesbeek, who would ultimately go on to win the 2015 DGC, in CS:GO, with rivals Bravado Gaming. B0n3® retired from competition in late 2015 to manage his side ahead of the 2016 season.
